Bharat Mata (Mother India) / directed by Mehboob Khan, Tells the story of a woman’s life from marriage to old age and portrays the tragedies of village life in rural India. [PR 9499.3 K536X B538V 1957A]

Born into Brothels  / directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman, 2005. Academy Award winning documentary follows children who live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. [HQ 792 I5 B67V 2004A]

Dam/age, directed by Aradhana Seth. Documentary that follows writer Arundhati Roy’s controversial campaign against the Narmada dam project. [Videocassette University Library lower level PR 9499.3 R59 D36V 2002]

Drowned Out  / director, Franny Armstrong, 2006. Tells the story of an Indian family as they make the difficult decision to remain in their home and drown rather than make way for the Narmada Dam. [HD 1698 I42 D76V 2002]

Freedom Now, 1947 / a co-production of WGBH Boston and the BBC.   Individuals involved in the struggle for independence in India and Africa were interviewed for this work, which shows how Mohandas Gandhi served as an example to the citizens of several African countries in securing their freedom from colonialism.  Videocassette, [University Library lower level D 421 P46x 1997A PT.12]

Harvest of Rain, written and directed by Sanjay Kak. Documentary on water management challenges in India. [DEWEY LIBRARY Media Collection - Videocassette S 619 W38 H37V 1995]

Gandhi  / directed by Richard Attenborough. Highly acclaimed film that tells the story of the life of Mohandas Gandhi who lead the people of India to freedom from British rule through non-violent protest. [DS 481 G3 G2112V 1982A]

India Rising (NOW hosted by David Brancaccio)  / JumpStart Productions., 2008. NOW reports on the growth of India’s middle class and how it will impact the global economy. [ HC 435.3 N684V 2008]

A Killer Bargain  / produced by Jesper Fogh Lund and Tom Heinemann, 2006. Examines the working conditions at several Indian textile companies, where workers handle toxic chemicals which damage employees and contaminate the environment. [HD 9866 I4 K55V 2006]

Lord Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy  / screenplay, David Butler ; director, Tom Clegg, 2006. Depicts the end of the British Empire in India and Mountbatten's role in the transition from colony to nation. [ PR 6052 U795 L67V 1986A]

Mangal Pandey, the Rising / producer, Bobby Bedi, Deepa Sahi, 2005.  Story of Mangal Pande, leader of the Sepoy Mutiny.  [DS 475.2 M23 M365V 2005]

The Namesake / directed by Mira Nair, 2006.  The American son of Indian immigrants wants to fit in with fellow New Yorkers, but his family is unwilling to let go of their traditional ways. [PS 3562 A316 N363V 2006A]

Partition  / Seville Pictures, directed by Vic Sarin, 2006.  This is a love story between a Sikh man and Muslim woman set against the backdrop of the division of the nation into India and Pakistan. [PR 9199.3 S37X P37V 2006A]

The Story of India  / Maya Vision International, 2008. In this six-part series created for for PBS and the BBC, India’s past is explored and her future predicted. [DS 414.2 S867V 2007A]

Earth / written and directed by Deepa Mehta, 2000.  This film tells the story of a young girl and her family, and their circle of friends of different faith, who are driven apart by partition.  Videocassette [University Library lower level  PR 9540.9 S53 I342V 1999A]

Fire / written and directed by Deepa Mehta, 1996. This film tells of two sisters-in-law involved in loveless marriages who turn to each other in a romantic relationship.  Videocassette [University Library lower level  HQ 1472 F67V 1996A]

Water  / written and directed by Deepa Mehta, 2006. Tells the story of Hindu widows living in austerity in an ashram. [PR 9199.3 M475X W38V 2005A]
