The following are biographical reference sources dealing with prominent Indians.  You may also wish to consult more general biographical sources.

In addition to reference sources, the Libraries own many books about people important to India's history.  To find additional biographies and memoirs, use the Libraries' online catalog, linked to the left.  Search the person of interest, last name first, as the subject of your search.

The Biographical Dictionary of Greater India, Henry Scholberg ed.  New Delhi, India: Promilla & Co., 1998. Selective biography of 157 people who influenced Indian history and destiny from earliest history to the modern era.  Biographies are extensive and well-written.  [REF DS 434 B56 1998]

Dictionary of Indian Biography, compiled and edited by IBC Research Wing. Varanasi: Indian Bibliographic Centre, 2000. Includes over 1000 short biographies of prominent Indians from the the 19th and the 20th centuries. [REF DS 434 D53 2000]

Great Thinkers of the Eastern World: The Major Thinkers and the Philosophical and Religious Classics of China, India, Japan, Korea, and the world of  Islam, Ian P. McGreal, ed.  Entries provide basic biographical information, a bibliography of the individual's major writings, and an essay describing his or her principal ideas. [REF B 5005 G74 1995]
