An in-depth guide to where to stay, eat, and visit in Honolulu, (and to a lesser extent Oahu moreover) Hawaii.

Welcome to Makiki

Situated north of Ala Moana and east of Downtown Honolulu, lies Makiki, an aera of mostly mid-rise apartment buildings, retailers such as Petco, Safeway, and Goodwill, and the large President William McKinley High School. Honestly, aside from the destinations listed in this tab, there really isn’t too much for the average tourist to do or see in Makiki, however there are a few hole-in-the-wall shops and eateries, and the area again does provide a Gimple at how people who call Hawaii their home live day to day, though this is a much more blue-collar neighborhood than Manoa. Thus, even if just driving though Makiki to arrive at a destination, take note, you just might see something unexpected!

Pro Tip: The working-class ruggedness of this neighborhood does give way to some no thrills amazing eats such as Itchy Butt Chicken (yup, Itchy Butt)! Despite the name, this tiny joint offers big flavors and big portions, mostly of delicious fried chicken and Asian rice bowls, tasty sides as well! Perfect for grab-and-go! Check out their menu on Uber Eats!
