Brief Guide to Research in East Asian Studies

Finding Books

Books are important for research because they

  • provide in-depth coverage on a topic
  • usually give background information on a topic
  • may present various viewpoints and interpretations on a topic
  • include extensive reference sources

To find books relevant to your research topic, you may use Primo discovery service and select the UAlbany Libraries option.

When you do not have an exact title, author name, or subject, do a search using keywords.

Locate books by call number which is the address of a book on shelf:

The University at Albany Libraries use the Library of Congress classification scheme. This call number system uses the combination of letters and numeric numbers. The letters represent the subject, and most East Asian materials will have call numbers that begin with the letter "B," "DS," or "PL."
