IST 605: The Science of Reading

Resources related to the Science of Reading and specific strategies for teachers and future teachers to use.

Introduction

The Science of Reading (SoR) is a term that has been around for a long time, but is finally getting the recognition it deserves. According to  The National Center on Improving Literacy, SoR is a collection of research that confirms and disconfirms how to best teach children how to read. SoR focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The research is ever evolving, so educators should stay up to date on best practice. The Infographic below shows what SoR is and what it isn't.

Throughout this libguide, you will find information on research behind SoR, examples of best practice, websites and blogs with information from educators on what SoR looks like in their classrooms, and a variety of resources to get you started with teaching students to read with the Science of Reading as a focus. This libguide is intended for educators and future educators to gain confidence and gather the information needed to teach students to read  with materials that can be found via UAlbany library and online.
