On this page, you’ll find resources that we often direct our students to: video tutorials, support spaces where students can ask for help or see worked problems, or other resources we think will explain or show concepts and processes. We strongly suggest you don’t send your students to any of these support spaces without first considering carefully how you want students to use these resources and then explicitly requiring them to use them so that they will learn. It is tempting to tell students, “If you are struggling with this homework, go watch this Kahn Academy video because it explains the idea behind covariates really well.” Similarly, you might suggest to students, “If you’re not sure how to get SPSS to clean the data, ask someone in Stack Overflow—that’s what professionals in the real world do.” We often think that sending students out to answer their own questions on the web is a real world approach to their learning challenges. However, research suggests that students often consume information on the web passively and don’t stop and reflect on how the solution they find on the web is different from their previous ideas, how they need to change their thinking, or how to integrate that new thinking into their work for your course. Only you, the instructor, can scaffold that kind of reflection. So rather than simply include links to the resources on this page in your syllabus or in an assignment, consider how you can require students to use and then reflect (in writing) on how their thinking is changing and developing based on their use of the resource you’ve asked them to use. Come to ITLAL for ideas and support to help you integrate supports like this into your course so that students are required to use them actively and reflectively.
