This article explains how graphic novels can be a source of entertainment, student engagement, and comprehension of literature, literary skills, culture, history, and the American psyche. It includes a sample lesson of the wordless graphic novel, The Arrival by Shaun Tan, and how it can be used to teach complex concepts and topics through visuals that illustrate metaphors and emotional tones. The article goes on to connect positive educational opportunities with graphic novels by stating how sequential art can be an act of communication by combining words and pictures that appeal to both ones' intellect and emotions.

Scholastic is known for providing books and literature formats to be utilized by students and teachers as well as articles for teachers to use as tools for inspiration in the classrooms. This article highlights how adding graphic novels to a teacher's toolbox can develop important reading and critical thinking skills in students. There are four points in this Guide to Teaching Graphic Novels that illustrate how a teacher can get started in including graphic novels into their curriculum as well as offers a list of graphic novel collections that could be used in the classroom for second to eighth graders.
