Darian Benson from Side Effects Public Media speaks with Yanna McGraw, the first full-time social worker employee at The Indianapolis Public Library. In the article they discuss what a social worker does at the library and their reasoning for bringing McGraw on board. 

Libraries and Social Workers — Perfect Partners
Christiane Petrin Lambert in the April 2020 edition of Social Work Today discusses several different areas in which social work and librarianship were being connected. This included discussing Whole Person Librarianship, college professors setting up meetings between social workers and librarians to connect and discuss how they may collaborate. The article ends with several of these figures talking about their vision of the future between libraries and social work.

Colin Dwyer talks about in the NPR Program All Things Considered in 2019 about the social difficulties in a library and speaks to several individuals about the disparity of training, the reality of dealing with those who may need aid, and the steps libraries are taking to alleviate this issue.

  • St. Louis County adds social workers to all 5 of their branches.
  • Barbara Trainin Blank from The New Social Worker back in 2014 lists several libraries adding social worker programs, and speaks with a few about the process. 
  • State Library of Iowa announces several social work projects being created after being awarded a grant

Scripps National News highlights the benefits associated with providing social worker library services. These services benefit the socio-economically disadvantaged while also servicing the library's mission to connect users with relevant resources. It also has the added benefit of repurposing librarian's time, since researching and providing this type of assistance can be quite time-consuming (Scripps National News, 2022).
