My name is Jacklyn Lewis and I am an ISSL student working on becoming a future librarian. I am passionate about reading for pleasure and reading as broadly and diversely as possible. I am constantly recommending books of all genres to people in my life, so I am happy to share some resources for you to find your next great read (especially if reading feels like a chore for you)!
This guide was created to help middle and high school students find books they’ll actually want to read. Whether you're someone who always has a book in your backpack or you're still trying to find a story that resonates with you, this LibGuide is meant to make that easier. Everything here is organized by resources and databases, explaining why you should use them and providing helpful tips on achieving the same.
The goal of this guide is simple: to support literacy while helping you discover books you enjoy. Reading shouldn’t feel like a chore, and the right book can change how you think about the world (or at least get you through a boring afternoon).
Before you can jump into searching for a book, you must understand the difference between genres. Many of the resources I am providing specify young adults, but you may be thinking, "I am almost an adult! That sounds too young for me." Young adult books are on more of a spectrum. While some books may be a bit juvenile (depending on your age) young adult books can often feature main characters graduating high school and moving onto college. These books are based on all of our formative years. Young adults could mean 19-35, and it can also refer to 12-18. The way it is defined is a hot-button issue in the reading community, which is why this guide is so important. With such a vast array of options in the young adult category, it can be hard to find the right one for you, which is where the recommendations in this guide come in!
