If you want to get free eBooks without a library card, Project Gutenberg has over 75,000 free eBooks. It's completely free, and you do not need to register or download a special app. There are also audiobooks offered. The books span from 1971 to 2021.
Arguably, the most helpful and most important resource on this LibGuide is Overdrive/Libby. If you have never heard of either, this will change your life. All you need is a library card, and you can borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines through your public or school library. Your school library may use a different platform, such as Sora or Destiny, but they all work similarly. Ask a librarian how!
There is also Hoopla, an app that provides instant access to books, audiobooks, movies, music, and more through your public library. Not every library offers Hoopla access, and it differs from Libby in a few key ways. Libby will provide you with several holds you can place and several books you can borrow at one time. Not all books will be available now, as there are limited resources.
For instance, I can place seven holds at a time, but I can only borrow five books simultaneously. This means you'll need to be strategic with your holds, and you can re-deliver holds at a later date through the app if you don't have time or space to read them when they're ready. Hoopla, however, provides a set number of allowable borrows each month, and these are all immediately available. There is no waiting period, but you have a limit on how much you can borrow. This number varies by library.
