A guide to the punk counterculture movement.

Search Techniques

Become an expert in punk history research!

  • Conduct a quick keyword search on Google Scholar or UAlbany's Discovery Platform.
    • Use Boolean operators (conjunction words like AND/OR/NOT) to expand/narrow your searches.
    • Keyword ideas: "history and punk;" "punk and fashion;" "punk and politics."
    • Conduct a proximity search; to search for resources with two words that could be near each other, but are not directly mentioned together, use "NEAR10" or substitute the number with the amount of words you'd like between your keywords. This will help to narrow down resources more specific to your needs!
      • Example: "punk NEAR5 fashion"
  • Use journals and databases like Taylor & Francis Online and Gale One File to look for journal articles. These can be accessed through the UAlbany Database Finder tool. If you are a non-UAlbany student, access databases through your public library card!
  • Search through the reference page of resources you are interested in. The author has most likely gotten their information from other great books and articles that you can look through as well.
  • Surf through YouTube for great archival footage of punk legends and contemporary video essays that go in depth about the history and fashion of punk. Use searches like "history of punk music."
  • Getty Images has some great free photos from the late 1970s. Simply construct a search, and you will find great images. I searched up "Vivienne Westwood" and "punk fashion 1970s" to get many of my images.

Happy searching!
