PAD 704: Research Design

This guide was created for PAD 704 Research Design but includes resources that will be useful for anyone working on a lit review or other research project.

Start at the library!

The University Libraries website provides access to many of the resources you will need to complete your research project.

  • Use the default library search tool to find print and electronic resources available through UAlbany libraries and all SUNY libraries.
  • Register for ILLiad, the interlibrary loan service, to request materials that are not owned or subscribed to by the library.
  • Access databases through the library website to ensure you can access materials electronically, even when you are off campus.
  • Find your subject specialist.

ILLiad

Register for ILLiad using your UAlbany credentials. This is an invaluable service provided by University Libraries to current students, faculty, staff, and emeritus faculty. Once registered, use your ILLiad account to request materials through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) or UA Delivery.

Use ILLiad to request

  • Journal articles
  • Print books and media that are not owned by University Libraries
  • Print books and media that are owned by University Libraries, but held in another location (e.g., Science Library, University Library)
  • Materials held in storage

Accessing Electronic Resources Off Campus

University Libraries provides access to electronic resources through subscriptions, which come with certain licensing restrictions that dictate who may or may not access the materials. You may be prompted to enter your UAlbany credentials before you can access some databases.

How does a database know I'm allowed access?

  1. Start with the University Libraries website!
  2. If you access electronic resources through the library website, you will be prompted to enter your UAlbany credentials.
  3. Once you've entered your credentials, you will be able to access materials provided with the library's subscription.
