Typography and Graphic Design

  • Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton offers an engaging introduction to typography, exploring its history and providing practical advice for using type effectively in design projects. Lupton explores typography as a visual language with its own rules similar to traditional grammatical ones. Especially useful in this book is the attention to letter anatomy, the use of space, and organizational structures. Some of the examples are a little dated and would benefit from a contemporary refresh. Visit WorldCat to find a copy near you.

  • Typography as a statement of Design by Preeti Yadav, Prof. Debkumar Chakrabarti, and Dandeswar Bisoyi from the Deptartment of Design at Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati, India offer interesting perspectives on typography's ability to convey information. The paper explores how letters are used to convey information and how design with letters (typography) alters that. Of special note is how the paper connects typography's ability to provide subtext through its design elements, such as tone or nuance. Have you ever been frustrated that a text cannot convey your tone? This paper may be special interest for you!
