Hello! My name is Kelsey, and I am a MSIS student at UAlbany. I currently work at a small library at an art college in Washington state. My interests lie in the arts, history, and contemporary art practice. I received my BA in painting from the University of Puget Sound and my MFA in interdisciplinary arts from Lesley University.
If you open a book or browse the web, you will undoubtedly see examples of typography. More than a study of standardized lettering, typography relates to how text is printed/reproduced and how it appears. This is an important distinction, because it relates so much to user experience. Fonts, spacing, sizing- all are elements of typography. In many ways, typography is an artform in itself.
This guide is intended to assist undergraduate students with their understanding of typography. Included in this guide are resources related to typographical origins, developments, and contemporary typography practices and applications. Users of this guide will be able to understand the key elements of typography, the difference between typography and type, and research strategies to secure additional information. This guide also includes an additional resources section, where users can discover interactive tools for building their knowledge and other interesting sources of information related to the rich world of typography.
