Search Engines

Here are the basic steps to follow when performing a search on the internet:

  • Go to a search engine like Google, Bing or your preferred search engine.
  • Type what you are looking for in the search bar at the top of the search engine page.
    • The search bar is found towards the top of the page for most of the search engines used
    • You can type anything in the search bar such as a single word, a phrase, a sentence, numbers, or keywords that are related to what you are searching for.
    • Typing a question about what you are looking for is often helpful, too.
  • Press "Enter" and your search will "run."
    • By pressing "Enter," the search engine will look for websites that contain information that you are looking for.
  • Click on a result to see what it contains.
  • If the search didn't give you the information you were looking for, rephrase your search using different keywords or questions.
  • Results can be viewed based on the type of result they are.
    • Categories such as "Images," "News" and "Shopping" are often at the top of the results page.

Databases

Here are the basic steps to follow when performing a search on Databases:

  • Go to a database of your choosing. I recommend checking out your library's database collections.
  • Type what you are looking for in the search bar of the database page.
    • Type your topic as single words or phrases.
    • Do not use full sentences.
  • Press "Enter" to see search results.

  • Consider using a Boolean search.
    • A Boolean search is a way of looking for information that uses specific words to limit what the search engine finds.
    • Words like AND, OR and NOT (called "operators" in the Boolean search) are used to narrow down or broaden results of the search.
