A year later the Supreme Court needed to clarify that the desegregation efforts would need to be done "with deliberate speed". However, this would open the door for local government to "take their time" in desegregating schools and other facilities.
Using the Commerce Clause in the Constitution, the Supreme Court found that the US government could legally force private businesses to not discriminate against customers on the basis of race.
This is a Supreme Court case that not enough people know about! The decision found that states could not ban marriages between people of different races, since they violated both the Due Process and the Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment.
