IST 605: Every Child Ready To Ready at Your Library

Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® (ECRR) is a parent/caregiver education initiative, directed toward public library staff, intended to promote early literacy.

Search Strategies

Search Tips

  1. Identify key concepts in your research question and put them in separate search boxes.
  2. Put phrases in quotation marks. For example: "early literacy"
  3. Use truncation symbol * at the root of a word to find variations of the search term. For example, if you type join*, the database will look for join, joins, joined, joining.
  4. When you find too many records, search one or more key concept in the field of Title, Subject term, or Abstract.
  5. When you find too few records, try to use synonyms of your key concepts in your searches. If you still can not find sufficient records, broaden up your research topic.

What are Boolean operators? How can I use them to improve my searches?

Boolean is a set of commands that can be used in almost every search engine, database, or online catalogue.  The most popular Boolean commands are AND, OR, and NOT.  Other commands include parentheses, truncation, and phrases.

Narrow your search using AND

Using the Boolean command AND in your search tells the search engine to give you results that contain all of the words you have entered.

Example

media AND violence: only those results that contain both media and violence will appear in your search results list.
