IST 605: Dungeons & Dragons

D&D was one of many pop culture elements victimized by the 1980's "Satanic Panic." This time period is defined by an abundance of cases and conspiracy theories involving satanic ritual abuse that spread across the country. The Satanic Panic addressed very real issues such as child abuse and violence, but also condemned activities such as Dungeons & Dragons. The game was blamed for inappropriate behaviors and even for the deaths of young people like Irving Lee Pulling and James Dallas Egbert III. The resulting conspiracy theories lead to the formation of anti-D&D groups such as B.A.D.D: Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons. Due to the Satanic Panic, D&D became highly controversial among some groups in the 1980's to the 1990's. However, the game persevered as an iconic "geek" staple, and is nearing mainstream in contemporary culture.
