IST 605: The American Civil War

A guide to understanding the conflict

Introduction

“No Known Copyright”

The American Civil War (1861–1865) is one of the most defining conflicts in United States history. Issues that had been festering for decades, such as slavery, economic systems, social issues, and state versus federal rights, finally came to a head with the siege of Fort Sumpter on April 12, 1861. After the conflict was over, America's path would forever be altered.  Even in 2024, the consequences and impact of the Civil War can still be seen in America’s politics.

This guide is designed for high school students to get an accessible and detailed overview of the Civil War. It includes the causes of the Civil War, the key battles and events, the major figures/leaders involved, societal life during the war, postwar reconstruction, and the legacy of the war.  To do this, this LibGuide will use multiple resources, including databases, books, journal articles, videos, authoritative websites, important keyword topics for research, and search strategies.
