IST 605: Novels in Verse for Young Adult and Middle Grade Readers

Welcome!

"A novel in verse can be a fantasy or a  work of nonfiction, as long as it is a narrative told through poetry...because of their fast pace and emotional charge, whether they cover someone’s life, an imaginary tale, or a difficult moment in history, novels in verse tend to stick [with me] for a long time." - Sasha Dowdy

In his text, A Poet’s Glossary, Edward Hirsch defines the verse novel:

“A novel in poetry. A hybrid form, the verse novel filters the devices of fiction through the medium of poetry. There are antecedents for the novelization of poetry in long narrative poems, in epics, chronicles, and romances, but the verse novel itself, as a distinct nineteenth-century genre, is different than the long poem that tells a story because it appropriates the discourse and language, the stylistic features of the novel as a protean [versatile] form.”

Verse novels are hybrid storytellers. This guide will provide resources for both teen readers (middle/high school) interested in novels in verse, and adolescent educators who work with young readers through reader's advisory, book tastings, and book talks.
