IST 605: Zen Buddhism: For Beginners' Minds

An introduction to Zen for individuals who are interested in Zen as a lifestyle and/or practice

Cutting Through Duality?! (Finding the right words)

To simplify the search process, the Glossary of Terminology, and Relevant Keywords on the sidebars of each section refer to the Library of Congress Authorized Subject Headings, Keywords, Titles, and so forth whenever possible.

Due to the variations of language, and translations, as well as the uniqueness of Zen Buddhism as a Japanese school, some terms do not have an authorized subject heading and/or keyword.

Finding the Right Words

Between languages, translations, cultural influence, contradictory definitions, and differences of meaning across schools of Buddhism, finding the right search terms is difficult. In the context of Zen Buddhism, some commonly used words are referred to in Pali, Sanskrit, Japanese, Chinese, and English. In other instances, two words can refer to the same idea.

For example...

Siddhartha Gautama has several names: Shakyamuni Buddha, Gautama Buddha, The Buddha, Siddhartha, Goutama Siddhattha (in Pali), Bhagavat, Tathagata, and so on. Moreover, the term 'Buddha' can refer to any enlightened being (since the word translates to "Awakened One" in English). What is the correct term to use?

According to the Library of Congress Authorized Headings, the correct term to use when referring to the Buddha is Gautama Buddha
