IST 605: J.R.R. Tolkien and his works

Resources and information regarding J.R.R. Tolkien and his associated works.

Academic Works

J.R.R. Tolkien was an Oxford educated scholar and published many pieces of academic works. For the purpose of this guide I have included translations of mythological works as academic endeavors as opposed to fictional stories. This list focuses on the texts produced in which Tolkien was the primary author or editor.

  • A Middle English Vocabulary (published in 1922)
  • Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (co-edited by J.R.R. Tolkien and E.V. Gordon, published in 1925)
  • Songs for the Philologists (by J.R.R. Tolkien, E.V. Gordon and others, published in 1936)
  • Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics (published in 1937)
  • Sir Orfeo (published in 1944)
  • Middle English 'Losenger': Sketch of an etymological and semantic enquiry (published in 1953)
  • Ancrene Wisse (edited by Tolkien, published in 1962)
  • The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien (edited by Christopher Tolkien and Humphrey Carpenter, published in 1981)

I have purposely decided to leave the History of Middle-Earth series (edited by Christopher Tolkien) out of this selection of texts because, while it is non-fiction and academic in its nature it is heavily related to middle earth it seems more appropriate to relate it in the fiction section rather than academic works.
