Sources About the Politics and Exile of Dante Alighieri

Dante Alighieri was very much involved in the political atmosphere in the Republic of Florence. During this time period there was political unrest between the Guelphs and the Ghibillines. The Guelphs were supporters of the papacy and the Ghibillines were supporters of the Holy Roman Empire. The Guelphs later split into two groups, the White Guelphs and the Black Guelphs. The White Guelphs wanted freedom from papacy influence in Florence and the Black Guelphs supported the influence. Dante's family was a member of the Guelph's and Dante later on became a member of White Guelphs. After initially having power, the White Guelphs were expelled from Florence by the Black Guelphs in 1302. Dante was exiled from Florence in the same year, and he did not return back for the rest of his life.
