Generative AI and Information Literacy: Authorship and Authority

The goal of this guide is to help students learn about the relationship between generative AI and authorship and authority

Activity 1

On the previous page, you read a brief summary of reasons why authorship and authority are important to the academic research process.

Now consider the following questions.

On a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being "not confident at all" and 5 being "very confident," how confident would you be in the authority of the information on the previous page if it was written by:

  • A human author with no expertise on the topic
  • A human author with a few years of relevant expertise
  • A human author with many years of relevant expertise
  • A generative AI tool, such as ChatGPT
  • A human author with significant contributions from a generative AI tool, such as ChatGPT
  • A human author with some edits by a generative AI tool, such as ChatGPT

Note that there are no right or wrong answers here, but notice any differences in how you respond to each question and think about why those differences might exist.
