IST 605: The Stages of Literacy: Emergent through Advanced

Introduction

Welcome to this LibGuide on the Stages of Literacy: Pre-Literacy to Mature/Advanced

This LibGuide will explain the different stages of literacy from early childhood through adulthood.  Included within this explanation will be definitions as well as indicators of the rough age range for individuals to enter and emerge from each stage of development.  Another function of the LibGuide is to identify key characteristics that will alert a caregiver or a teacher when an individual is within each stage, illuminate methods of support for enhancing an individual's growth in literacy capabilities within each stage, and recommend key literacy activities that are specific to each stage of literacy development.  Also discussed will be a focus on the different factors that influence the development of an individual’s literacy skills.

An additional function of this LibGuide is to highlight how those pursuing literacy majors in both undergraduate and graduate schools can use this guide to help them: as a basic introduction to the stages of literacy; as a study aid for test prep; and as a resource for finding scholarly work that has informed the development of this LibGuide.

While this LibGuide is intended for students in both undergraduate and graduate programs who are pursuing literacy majors, anyone can benefit from reading it because it gives the reader a comprehensive look at the stages of literacy that a child/adolescent passes through on their way to becoming fully literate, and because it supplies recommendations for activities and supports that literacy educators, parents, and other caregivers can utilize to help advance their students'/children's literacy learning.
