IST 605: The Ruling Class of Britain

This book discusses the political and military actions of King William I during his reign. It goes over how he led the conquest of Normandy, earning him the moniker William the Conqueror. It’s main strength is that it is descriptive of the ramifications of his actions, and how this set the stage for the rest of his lineage. However, it shies away from lawmaking aspects, such as his lawmaking policies and taxation.

William II, better known as William Rufus, was the third son of William the Conqueror and England's king for only 13 years (1087-1100) before he was mysteriously assassinated. This book goes over his life story and how William II governed and ruled. The book's greatest strength is its focus on William’s relationships, which defined much of his rule. However, the book is somewhat too forgiving of William’s attitude, and paints William in a kinder light.

This biography presents a major reassessment of Henry's character, challenging previous interpretations, and places the history of his reign within the political setting of the day. The king, magnates, royal administration, his relationship with the church, diplomacy, the role of his family, most notably the marriages of his children, are all discussed. Its biggest strength is how detailed it is, as it is the culmination of years of research. However, its biggest drawback is its length, as this is a very heavy book full of details.

With a facing-page English translation from the Latin text and also an introduction and notes by R. H. C. Davis.This book is a primary source on the life and rule of King Stephen. Created in 1619, it encapsulates the decisive power of state and military, and the decisions King Stephen made during his rule. It’s main strength is it’s recording of the life and times of the king, due to the author having witnessed these scenes. However, there the fact that as a primary source who’s author is a matter of debate, there is doubt on the validity of these recordings.
