Growing a Life : Teen Gardeners Harvest Food, Health, and Joy

Growing a Life : Teen Gardeners Harvest Food, Health, and Joy

Weaving together the author’s history of nature and garden education in the United States with interviews with teenagers exposed to gardening programs, the reader learns about the mental health, environmental, and community benefits of bringing gardening to youths. Gardening connects these children to their greater world and encourages respect and care for nature, leading one teen to speak out against littering in his friend group and another to share that gardening helps him feel more peaceful. The author connects various research on gardening and mental health, such as the effect of gardening on cortisol levels.

While this book may not appeal to adolescents themselves as it is heavy on research summaries and the experiences of an older adult, it can be an educational and inspiring read for teachers and parents who may want to begin a garden at home with their children or bringing a gardening program to their school.

This book is available online via EBSCOhost Academic eBook Collection (North America).
