ORCID

Persistent identifiers (PIDs) are unique and permanent (or persistent) identifiers digital objects. Unlike traditional URLs, persistent IDs won't break over time.

PIDs can help:

• disambiguate people

  • if you have a common name or change your name during your career, your publications are all still associated and discoverable with your unique ID

• disambiguate organizations

  • funders and publishers use PIDs to correctly identify your institution

Persistent IDs for people:

• ORCID ID

  • create an author profile for your publications

  • many funders and publishers require that authors link to their free ORCID ID

  • example profile

Persistent IDs for organizations:

• Research Organization Registry ID (ROR)

  • your institution will have a unique ID that funders and publishers will use to disambiguate your institution

  • for example, here is UAlbany's

Persistent IDs for products:

• Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

  • a persistent link to a resource such as a publication

  • example: https://doi.org/10.5555/12345680

• Handle

• Archival Resource Keys (ARKs)
