Generative AI and Information Literacy: Information Privilege

The goal of this guide is to help students learn about the relationship between generative AI and access to information.

Generative AI & Information Privilege

student typing on a computerRight now, many generative AI tools are free to use. This has benefits both to users and AI companies.

Users get to try out the tools, gain experience using them, and discover creative ways to integrate these tools into their academic, personal, professional, and creative lives.

Meanwhile, AI companies benefit from user data and the free training that users are essentially providing to their AIs, which learn from what we do with them.

But there is already some inequality associated with access to generative AI, which will likely only get worse once these tools inevitably become subscription-based.

Below are the potential barriers which can create unequal access to information, mentioned earlier in the guide.

  • Geographical location
  • Access to technology
  • Access to education/higher education
  • Socioeconomic status

Choose one and explore how this barrier might increase inequality for students as generative AI becomes more integrated into our lives, either now or in the future.
