Generative AI and Information Literacy: Ownership of Information

The goal of this guide is to help students learn about the relationship between generative AI and issues such as copyright

Generative AI and copyright

Now that you’ve read a little bit about what copyright law is, it’s time to consider how generative AI is starting to complicate questions around the ownership of information both from the perspective of the user of that information and its creator.

Because you are both a user and creator of information, you should be aware of the evolving issues around generative AI and copyright. This will help you think critically about your own use of AI, how AI uses your information, and how you use information generated by AI.

For this activity, start by reading the following article from an academic website called The Conversation:

This article outlines many of the challenges generative AI presents for users and creators of information in the United States. It asks several important questions, paraphrased below:

  • Should artists and creators whose work was scraped to train generative AI models be compensated?
  • Who owns the images, text, and other information that generative AI systems produce?
  • Is the process of fine-tuning prompts for generative AI a form of authentic creative expression?

The answers to these questions are still evolving. Based on what you read in the article, what you've read in this guide so far, your own opinions and experiences, and any further research you might choose to do, pick one or more of these questions and reflect on your own feelings and thoughts about what you think the answer should be.
