Generative AI and Information Literacy: Authorship and Authority

The goal of this guide is to help students learn about the relationship between generative AI and authorship and authority

Final reflection

Authorship and authority are important for research for a number of reasons, including those listed by the (ChatGPT-generated) text in the earlier section. But generative AI tools are bound to have an effect on our perceptions of the authority of the information we use as well as the information we create.

Reflect on these questions:

  • How does the use of a generative AI tool to create a source of information affect your perception of the credibility or authority of that information, both positively and negatively?
  • Should authors who use generative AI to aid in the writing or production of information have to disclose the role of AI in their process to potential users of that information? Why or why  not and, if so, how?
  • If you were to use generative AI yourself to aid in the writing of an academic or work assignment, what positive and negative effects do you think that would have on the intended audience’s perception of your authority, credibility, and learning?
