IST 605: Amateur Radio (HAM)

Ham Study

Ham Study is a free study tool for practicing the amateur radio licence exam. You can practice with real questions that are on the exam, though flash cards, and then take practice tests to see how you do. They also provide explanations for the answers to each question. This is a very useful tool recommended by many in the community, and it even helped me with studying for the exam. There are paid programs out there as well that have videos for studying and books for materials, but this tool is free and contains the same information needed.

Ham Radio Technician License Prep 2022-2026

These videos from the YouTube channel Ham Radio Crash Course go through the technician license exam questions, the first exam every new amateur radio operator obtains. He goes through the questions giving extra explanations and tips for acing the exam. He also uses the free tool Ham Study as well so viewers can follow along. Having someone experienced in the hobby and knowledgeable of the technical details involved explain these questions can help people have a better understanding. There are 12 episodes in the playlist however, so watching all the videos will take some time.

FCC Amateur Radio Service

This source provides official information on the amateur radio service. This is the part of the FCC that oversees the regulations and enforces the rules of amateur radio in the United States. This page also gives a brief description of the three classes of amateur radio licenses, with information on what privileges each license allows. This is a helpful source as it connects you to the official source of the rules. The FCC oversees much more than just amateur radio, so navigating from the home page to find information can be difficult. I would suggest searching "amateur radio" in the search box to find more relevant information.

Also, as part of being licensed, the FCC has a public database of all registered amateur radio operators. On the Home page of this guide, I provided my callsign in my bio so you can look it up in the database and see what kind of information is provided.
