IST 605: Screen Time and Children

For Undergrad Psychology Students studying the effects of screen time on children and teens

Search and Advanced Search Strategies

For this particular guide, here are some strategies that work very well.

Be simplistic with your words. Use the keywords from the keyword section of the guide, and use one at a time to be most effective.

If you are looking for books for your particular project, do your best to be as specific as possible. For example, if you are looking for a book about the relationship between anxiety and screens for children, use a search term such as:  books about anxiety and screen time in children.

Think about your population and the specific needs, issues, and traits that this will bring up.  For example, this guide provides access to materials for children and teens. Evidently, this provides a very broad spectrum, so you may want to think more deeply about the specific type of population that you would like to look at. For example, the issues with young children and screen time can involve everything from troubles with sleep, anti pro social behaviors, delays in development, and anxiety. For teens, these can look very similar, but there is the addition of depression, issues with self-esteem, health issues from sedentary behavior, and academic issues. All of these can be very important to think about when deciding on a concentration for a project of this nature.

Ideally,  you will be able to find a lot of the things you need from the SUNY Albany library,, however, for books in particular, you can also check WorldCat and interlibrary loan through your local library. You could also look at both of these places for access to documentaries and videos as well, if this is something that you are looking for, as well as access to videos as well. For articles, if unable to find them on the databases in your library, the best thing to think about is looking for scholarly sources. For example, if you are looking for articles about how screens affect the academics of teens, you can use the words scholarly articles on the relationship between screens academics in teens.
