Return to OZ (1985 film)

https://search.worldcat.org/title/54898185

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the anti-Disney, yet Disney movie Return to Oz has become a cult classic and favorite film among Baum book fans as it represents later Oz characters from The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz!  Unfortunately, it was marketed as a sequel to MGM’s The Wizard of Oz though it could not be more different in tone, style, and casting though it licensed the ruby red shoes.  The film begins with a 9-yr old Dorothy suffering from insomnia as Aunt Em and Uncle Henry rebuild the family farm, taking a darker turn when she is sent to receive electric shock therapy to hopefully cure her sleepless nights and wipe her memories of Oz.  Return to Oz also features the first live action Disney princess in Princess Ozma!

In the peak of the 50th anniversary celebrations that ushered in a Golden Age of Oz, especially in merchandising,  this documentary directed by the Tin Man's son offered rare behind-the-scenes footage from the 1939 film with reminiscences by Oz royalty like Baum’s grandson Robert A. Baum, composers Arlen and Harburg, producer Mervyn LeRoy, and actors Judy Garland, her daughter Liza Minnelli, Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and many more!  It is notably hosted by Angela Lansberry, who actually co-starred with Judy Garland in The Harvey Girls back in their MGM days, and also includes salvaged footage from L. Frank Baum’s own Oz silent films and Harold Arlen’s home videos.  This 50 minute documentary has been included as a bonus feature on VHS rereleases for Oz fans and collectors since 1990.

Gregory Maguire, AG90: What Inspired you to write Wicked? (2015 Youtube video)

In 1995, Gregory Maguire published Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, melting a one dimensional villain and unveiling a complex anti-hero of Oz.  He also named the witch!  Originally written to explore the nature of evil, Wicked has since redefined the landscape of Oz and fairytale retellings, being turned into one of the longest running Broadway musicals and now a 2-part Oscar nominated musical film franchise.  In Wicked, the slippers remain mysterious in their color, shape shifting between silver and ruby red hues.
