Understanding Patterns

Now that you know how to crochet the basics, it's time to learn about patterns! Patterns usually exist in two forms. The first is written in text, includes abbreviations for well-known terms, and often includes pictures. The second includes charts made of symbols that represent each stitch. Both may look stange and incomprehensible at first. Below I've included some resources to help you learn how to read patterns.

Glossary

Crochet Terms and Glossary
Before I get to the patterns, it’s important that you understand crochet terminology. It’s common for experienced crocheters to use terms and abbreviations of terms that are specific to crochet. You probably already encountered some in this Libguide. This Glossary explains those terms and includes pictures. I’d recommend keeping this handy and referring to it when you run into a new word. If you need more than the pictures, then try opening YouTube and searching for the term. You’ll find many tutorial videos.

Written Patterns

Then she moves on to an example of a written pattern. She goes section by section, explaining the format and common knowledge that experienced crocheters possess.

This creator in this video breaks down chart patterns. The creator starts by explaining the symbols for common stitches. Then she explains how to read a chart in rows and in the round. If you are working with an advanced chart that includes complex stitches you may have to look for other resources. This video is a great place to start.
