Anthropology: Research Guide

In the broadest sense, anthropology is the science and study of humankind. The discipline studies human beings in their biological, cultural and social aspects. Four major subdisciplines constitute the field in the United States:

• Archaeology​ (Society for American Archaeology)
• Biological/Physical Anthropology (American Association of Physical Anthropologists)
• Cultural/Social Anthropology (The Society of Cultural Anthropology)
• Linguistics (Linguistics Society of America)

​The American Anthropological Association (AAA) is the largest professional anthropology society in the United States.
